Jean Grey has long stood among the Marvel Universe’s most powerful mutants. A founding member of the X-Men and a gifted telepath and telekinetic, she initially required psychic safeguards placed by Professor Charles Xavier to prevent her abilities from overwhelming her. As her control improved, those restrictions gradually diminished, revealing even greater potential.

Her status has fluctuated across different eras and stories, particularly as Marvel’s concept of Omega-level mutants has evolved. Even so, only a select group of mutants can plausibly challenge Jean at the height of her power.

Storm

Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, is an Omega-level mutant capable of controlling the planet’s weather. Her abilities have expanded beyond ordinary storms: she has manipulated cosmic weather systems and directed solar flares. Combined with her experience and exceptional control, Storm remains one of the X-Men’s most formidable members and a possible rival to Jean’s PEAK power.

Iceman

Robert “Bobby” Drake has developed far beyond his early ability to create and manipulate ice. Iceman can transform his body into living ice, reconstitute himself and manipulate cold energy in increasingly complex ways. Emma Frost’s time controlling his body helped reveal his Omega-level potential, prompting Bobby to explore abilities that place him among the world’s most powerful mutants.

Rachel Grey-Summers

Rachel Grey-Summers is Jean’s daughter from an alternate future timeline and a powerful telepath and telekinetic in her own right. She has also connected with the Phoenix Force, inheriting part of its power. Although that connection has changed over time, Rachel’s mental abilities remain comparable to Jean’s, making her one of the clearest candidates to challenge her mother.

Professor X

Charles Xavier’s mastery of telepathy gives him an extraordinary range of abilities. He can read minds, influence the perceptions of large groups, communicate psychically, enter the astral plane and inflict pain through focused mental attacks. Xavier recognized Jean’s potential early in her life and has sometimes worked alongside her as an equal, particularly in navigating the astral plane.

Magneto

Magneto’s control over magnetism and electromagnetic energy makes him a force capable of affecting both matter and the planet’s environment. He can manipulate steel and influence Earth’s gravimetric field, placing him among the most dangerous mutants alive. Jean has confronted him repeatedly, but his power and experience make him a serious opponent even when compared with her most advanced abilities.

Franklin Richards

Franklin Richards occupies a different level of power from most mutants. His psionic abilities emerged during childhood, and he has demonstrated the capacity to create or alter realities. During the conflict with Onslaught, Franklin placed the Avengers and his family in an alternate reality before restoring them to the proper one.

His potential has drawn the attention of both Professor X and Doctor Doom. Although Franklin has altered his DNA so that he generally does not appear to possess mutant abilities, his powers return for one day each year, when he monitors threats affecting the multiverse.

Proteus

Kevin MacTaggert, known as Proteus, can warp reality, making him an extremely dangerous opponent. His existence is primarily psionic, requiring him to inhabit host bodies that eventually deteriorate. Despite this limitation and an early vulnerability to metal, Proteus has shown immense potential, including helping resurrect deceased mutants and terraform Mars during the Age of Krakoa.

Legion

David Haller, Professor Xavier’s son, possesses numerous psionic and reality-altering abilities. His powers are divided among multiple personalities, with abilities including telepathy, telekinesis and pyrokinesis. Legion’s actions have contributed to major timeline changes such as the Age of Apocalypse and the Age of X.

His mental instability remains a significant weakness, but his power can be overwhelming when he maintains control. During the Age of Krakoa, he helped defend mutantkind from Orchis before disappearing after saving members of the X-Men.

Vulcan

Gabriel Summers can absorb, manipulate and redirect energy, including cosmic energy. His history as a weapon and his resentment toward Xavier and the X-Men contributed to his volatile nature. Vulcan later displayed the full scale of his abilities by killing several opponents, claiming the Shi’ar throne and battling Black Bolt before being forced into a space-time rift.

He eventually returned to the mutant colony on Mars, with his traumatic memories erased. His ability to control vast amounts of energy places him among the most powerful members of the Summers family.

Jamie Braddock

Jamie Braddock can manipulate reality through what appear to be strings controlling matter. He can reshape physical objects, inflict pain and alter the conditions around his targets. His mental state makes his actions unpredictable, but he has also used his abilities to protect his siblings and has sacrificed himself for them.

After being resurrected on Krakoa, Jamie helped terraform Mars. His ultimate fate remains uncertain following the end of the Age of Krakoa, but his reality-warping powers give him the potential to challenge even the strongest mutants.

Jean Grey remains central to the X-Men and continues to rank among Marvel’s most powerful characters. However, the abilities of Storm, Iceman, Rachel Grey-Summers, Professor X, Magneto, Franklin Richards, Proteus, Legion, Vulcan and Jamie Braddock show that mutant power extends well beyond a single champion.
