Anime films often conclude with the heroes defeating evil or taking a moral stand. However, some stories reject that familiar resolution and show villains prevailing, at least in the decisive moments. These endings leave their protagonists defeated, changed, or forced to live with consequences they cannot undo.

In Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, Akaza defeats Kyojuro Rengoku in one of the franchise's most devastating battles. The Flame Hashira's courage and principles inspire Tanjiro Kamado and others in the Demon Slayer Corps, but his determination cannot overcome the Upper Rank Three demon's overwhelming power. Akaza fatally wounds Rengoku and escapes before sunrise, giving the demons the victory despite the Hashira's final stand.

The End of Evangelion presents an even darker outcome for humanity. Gendo Ikari and SEELE initiate the Third Impact, merging human beings into a collective consciousness and eroding individuality. Rei's defiance allows Shinji to reject Instrumentality, but the catastrophe has already destroyed almost all human civilization, which dissolves into LCL. Shinji is ultimately left amid the ruins with Asuka, facing the difficult question of what human existence should mean.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods establishes Beerus as an opponent far beyond the heroes' level. The God of Destruction defeats Goku even in Super Saiyan 3 form and later overpowers several other fighters, including Vegeta, Majin Buu, Piccolo and other members of Earth's strongest warriors. Goku's Super Saiyan God transformation still does not secure victory, and he acknowledges his defeat. Beerus only spares Earth because his opponents entertain him and its food appeals to him.

Berserk Golden Age Arc III: Descent changes its story through Griffith's betrayal. After being rescued by the Band of the Falcon, Griffith activates the Crimson Behelit and triggers the Eclipse. He sacrifices his former allies to become Femto, while the God Hand's Apostles massacre the band. Griffith also attacks Casca to inflict further pain on Guts. Although Guts and Casca survive, the physical and emotional consequences remain, and Griffith emerges from the ordeal having achieved his transformation and victory.
