Episode 4 of A Certain Dark Item focuses on the relationship between Mugino and the members of her team. Although Choubi is afraid that any mistake could provoke Mugino’s deadly temper, the group does not abandon one another when a mission takes a dangerous turn. Instead, each member contributes to the effort to survive.
Choubi, who lacks superpowers and appears out of her depth, takes a decisive role in the confrontation with Mitori. While Mugino creates a distraction, Choubi covers herself in blood and pretends to be dead before using one of Mitori’s discarded knives to strike at the right moment.
The episode also raises the question of why betrayal does not appear to be a serious concern within the group. Choubi and Saisai are relatively new arrivals, but Rikou and Frenda seem to share a deep friendship with Mugino. Their behavior suggests that they are not simply obeying her out of fear, despite Mugino’s status and immense power.
One explanation is that Rikou and Frenda treat Mugino as a person rather than as one of the city’s most powerful individuals. They are comfortable teasing her and involving her in ordinary activities, a form of familiarity that may be especially meaningful to someone whom most people fear. Choubi and Saisai, meanwhile, appear to follow the tone established by the older members of the team.
Mugino also gives her subordinates considerable freedom outside their missions. She largely leaves them to decide how to spend their money and free time, and even on assignments she is primarily concerned with results. If a team member has a different idea about how to complete a job, Mugino is generally willing to let them pursue it.
As a result, the episode works as a character study of Mugino. Beneath her detached attitude and sense of superiority, she provides an environment combining money, excitement, personal independence, and protection. That balance helps explain why the people around her choose to stand together and protect the group.
