Ex Machina, Alex Garland’s acclaimed science-fiction thriller, is now available to stream for free on Pluto TV. The film was included among the service’s November 2026 additions and became available on November 1.

Released in 2014, Ex Machina follows a programmer invited by a technology CEO to administer a Turing test to an intelligent and strikingly lifelike female android. As the evaluation continues, the android’s apparent self-awareness and capacity for deception challenge the assumptions of the humans around her.

The film stars Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac. Its performances, writing and direction have contributed to its reputation as one of the strongest science-fiction films of the 2010s. Its visual effects won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, while Garland received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Ex Machina has also remained notable for its exploration of artificial intelligence, consciousness and humanity. The character Ava, played by Vikander, leaves viewers questioning whether she is genuinely conscious and capable of emotion or is instead manipulating the people around her.

Those ideas have continued to attract attention as generative AI, neural networks and manipulated algorithms have become more common. The film currently holds a 92% Certified Fresh rating from more than 290 critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an 86% audience score based on more than 50,000 user reviews.

Garland’s film remains one of his most recognized science-fiction projects and marked his directorial debut. He later continued working in the genre with 2018’s Annihilation, starring Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac. Ex Machina is now streaming for free on Pluto TV.
