More than two decades after Keanu Reeves played John Constantine in the 2005 film, a new feature about the DC Comics antihero is reportedly in development at DC Studios. The studio has hired Francis Galluppi, who is directing the upcoming horror film Evil Dead Wrath, to write the project, according to Deadline.
The movie is at a very early stage, and no actors are attached. It is also unclear whether Galluppi is being considered to direct. DC Studios declined to comment, so further details have not been confirmed.
There is no indication that the new film would continue the story of Reeves’ Constantine. It could instead introduce another version of the character, though the project’s place in the DCU has not been confirmed. Reeves and director Francis Lawrence have both expressed interest in making a sequel to the 2005 movie, but the report offers no indication that it is moving forward. In 2023, Reeves told CinemaBlend, “We’re trying. I don’t know if it’s gonna happen.”
Constantine has appeared in several screen adaptations since the 2005 film. Matt Ryan starred in the 2014 NBC series and later reprised the role in other DC shows, with his final performance in Legends of Tomorrow in 2021. Jenna Coleman played Johanna Constantine in The Sandman in 2022, and Ryan has also voiced the character in animated projects.
No casting or production timeline has been announced for the reported film.
