Marvel’s upcoming Challenges of Doom: Doctor Strange #1 sets up a major confrontation between the two characters, framing them as closely matched rivals in magic and intellect. The issue, written by Al Ewing, is scheduled to go on sale November 4.

The story begins earlier in Doctor Strange’s life, when he is studying under the Ancient One. At a low point, Strange admits he is unsure why he wants to learn magic and says he had hoped to heal his hands and return to his former life. The Ancient One tells him that recognizing how much he does not know is where magic begins.

The Ancient One also warns Strange that Doctor Doom will be his “only true foe” in the final reckoning, describing the relationship as one magician’s opposite number. The preview then shows Doom and Strange meeting before their contest, with Doom offering him a brandy.

The new story explores Doom and Strange as magical counterparts, but it does not replace Reed Richards as Doom’s most famous nemesis. Doom’s long-running rivalry with Mister Fantastic remains central to his history, while his relationship with Strange is shaped by their competing magical abilities and the possibility of temporary alliances.

Challenges of Doom: Doctor Strange #1 will be released by Marvel Comics on November 4.
