Mary Jane Watson is entering a new phase after her separation from the Venom symbiote. A preview of Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane #1 reveals that she plans to focus on entertainment by starting her own production company and producing an Off-Broadway play.
Mary Jane became a superhero several years ago as Jackpot, using powerful gauntlets created by her then-boyfriend, Paul Rabin. After the gauntlets malfunctioned during the Venom War, she became bonded to the Venom symbiote at a cellular level and took on the identity of the All-New Venom. The recent Queen in Black crossover separated her from the symbiote, which returned to Eddie Brock.
However, Mary Jane has not lost every trace of her former powers. The preview explains that Venom left behind a small fragment called Fang, which remains bonded to her. Fang allows Mary Jane to use some of Venom’s abilities, including creating a web capable of grabbing objects and blocking attacks.
In the preview, Mary Jane meets with Flash Thompson to explain her plans. She reflects on her difficult family life, her ability to hide her emotions, her acting career and the way her relationship with Peter Parker brought her into Spider-Man’s world. She also acknowledges that she had embraced her time as Venom.
Flash expresses interest in Mary Jane’s new production venture but points out that she has started many projects over the years and eventually walked away from them. Their conversation is interrupted when Stilt-Man attacks, leaving the next stage of Mary Jane’s story to the series itself.
Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane #1 is a five-issue miniseries written by Ashley Allen and illustrated by Phil Noto. The issue is rated T, spans 32 pages and costs $4.99.
