Netflix’s new six-part adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is being positioned as a more expansive reboot of Jane Austen’s classic novel. Following the release of its trailer, the miniseries appears ready to focus not only on the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, but also on the social and economic forces shaping the characters’ lives.
At the center of Austen’s story is the limited choice available to women. Without independent income, women were expected to secure their futures through marriage or work as governesses. The Bennet family faces additional pressure because it has five daughters who must find suitable husbands or risk financial hardship.
The new trailer reportedly emphasizes these stakes through Elizabeth’s recognition that women have few paths available to them. Austen used humor and irony to address the reality of marriage as a form of economic security, and the Netflix series appears intent on bringing that aspect of the novel to the foreground.
The 2005 film starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen remains widely admired, particularly for its romantic depiction of Elizabeth and Darcy. However, the feature-length format required it to prioritize the central romance and reduce the space available for secondary storylines and broader social themes. The adaptation touched on the Bennet family’s financial situation and Charlotte’s marriage to Mr. Collins, but presented the story primarily as a sweeping love story.
A television format gives Netflix more opportunity to follow the novel’s several-year timeline and develop its misunderstandings, missed connections and supporting characters. Those elements are important to Austen’s commentary, including the consequences of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet marrying for love without making adequate financial plans.
The series is directed by Euros Lyn and written by Dolly Alderton. Emma Corrin plays Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden portrays Mr. Darcy, Olivia Colman appears as Mrs. Bennet and Rufus Sewell plays Mr. Bennet.
Netflix is scheduled to release the Pride and Prejudice miniseries on December 3, 2026.
