Curry Barker's debut feature film, Obsession, has emerged as one of the most profitable movies in history following its theatrical release earlier this year. While the character of Nikki Freeman, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, quickly became a pop culture icon, Barker recently revealed that a specific detail designed to enhance her terrifying nature was missed by most viewers.
In an interview with Movie TV News, Barker discussed a scene where the protagonist Bear, played by Michael Johnston, discovers photos secretly taken of him by Nikki. One particular image shows an unaware Bear inside a record store, captured from an angle that suggests it was taken from the ceiling. Barker intended this perspective to be deeply unsettling, implying that Nikki had physically positioned herself on the ceiling to snap the picture.
Barker explained that he believed the horror would stem from the audience realizing how Nikki managed to get into such a position. "I thought it would be creepy if... somehow she got on the ceiling to take it," Barker stated. He noted with some disappointment that no one seemed to pick up on this implication, leaving the method of her ascent unexplained and adding to the mystery of her actions.
The director suggested that viewers may have overlooked this first image because they were distracted by the implications of a second photo. That image featured Nikki's face with the message "not me" written underneath, interpreted as a cry for help from the real Nikki who had lost control to the One Wish Willow. Despite this specific detail going unnoticed, the film was filled with other unsettling moments that resonated with audiences.
Obsession achieved remarkable financial success with a production budget of just $750,000, generating over $525 million worldwide. This performance makes it not only the highest-grossing horror film of the year but also one of the most profitable releases ever, earning approximately 700 times its budget. The film's success has turned Nikki into a phenomenon, with impersonators appearing at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights and her inclusion as a playable character in Fortnite.
While there are no concrete plans for a sequel to Obsession, Barker's next project, Anything but Ghosts, will be set within the same universe. The film is currently available on Peacock and is scheduled to join Netflix on November 17, 2026.
