Overgeared Episode 6 continues to nudge Grid toward becoming a more likable protagonist by focusing on the connections he has formed in Satisfy. The episode finds some success in its comedy, but its more earnest character moments do not always land.
Grid’s visit with his blacksmithing master Kahn offers one of the episode’s clearest signs of personal growth. When Kahn visits his late son’s grave and speaks proudly about his apprentice, Grid sets aside his usual sarcasm long enough to show sympathy. He calls Kahn his best friend and promises to look after him, a notable change for a character who has shown little concern for others.
The sincerity is quickly tempered when Grid encounters the ghosts of Kahn’s ancestors and receives a new job quest. The moment risks making his promise feel like a route to another power-up, though Grid’s fear during the ghostly visit provides a comic ending at his expense.
The episode is less successful with Huroi, who has appointed himself Grid’s loyal servant despite Grid’s objections. Rather than building the humor around Huroi’s devotion and his limited understanding of Grid’s flaws, the show leans on jokes about Grid’s discomfort with the attention. Grid’s treatment of Huroi also feels harsh, particularly because Huroi is presented as one of the more decent players in Satisfy.
A sequence in which Grid farms an orc tower sets up a joke about his underestimation of the orcs’ intelligence, but does not develop the idea before he fights through them. The battle does, however, lead Grid to reconsider Huroi after seeing him sacrifice himself. That shift adds a step to Grid’s character development, though the episode leaves open whether his growth can make up for his usual crudeness. Overgeared is streaming on Crunchyroll.
