Power Rangers: Green #3 expands the comic’s post-apocalyptic setting by shifting attention away from Tommy Oliver and toward characters whose experiences reveal more about the damaged world around them. The issue, published by BOOM! Studios, is on sale now and contains major spoilers for its story.
It opens with Scorpina grieving the death of one of her minions. Her response strengthens her determination to rid the world of the magic she sees as responsible for its suffering. The story then turns to Tommy’s camp, narrated by Alpha rather than Tommy himself. Alpha’s perspective offers insight into the Red Censer while adding detail to the state of the world, without excusing the destruction it has caused.
Goldar also takes on a major role. He approached Tommy not only for help against the Red Censer and Scorpina’s plans, but because he wants a worthy opponent to defeat him in battle. Worn down by repeated conflicts, Goldar still refuses to accept a death away from the battlefield. His motives reflect how much this future has changed the familiar characters and their conflicts.
The issue is slower-paced and more focused on character development than action. That approach gives artist Gustaffo Vargas room to depict older, more weathered versions of familiar characters, while writer Pallie Paul Allor uses perspectives beyond Tommy’s to make the setting feel more fully developed.
By the end, Tommy is ready to return to the fight and stop the chaos Scorpina has unleashed. The journey means going back to Angel Grove, where he is reluctant to encounter its residents. The unease appears personal and connected to his adopted daughter, Mirella Vex. The next issue may provide more detail about her history and Tommy’s journey through this future.
With only two issues remaining in the series, the tension is building toward a breaking point. Issue #3 leaves Tommy poised to confront the past as he moves to protect the future.
