Ranma ½ Season 3, Episode 5 centers on the escalating conflict between Ranma, Akane and Kodachi. Kodachi’s dramatic gymnastics presentation, complete with black rose petals, adds to the episode’s exaggerated tone as she attempts to control Ranma through a scheme involving cookies laced with Rohypnol.
Ranma finds himself caught between two fiancées who both want him to appreciate their cooking, although Kodachi’s intentions quickly become far more sinister. Her plan involves incapacitating him and turning him into an unwilling object of devotion, while Akane becomes suspicious of the blackmail almost immediately.
The episode also follows Ranma’s desperate attempt to recover photographic negatives that appear to show him and Kodachi in a compromising situation. His efforts lead to a series of slapstick encounters, first with the Kuno family’s alligator and later with Tatewaki Kuno. The necklace protecting the negatives has also been electrified by Kodachi, adding another absurd obstacle to the chase.
The story does not reach a resolution in this episode, but its reviewer praised the deliberately silly approach and the amount of laughter generated by the chaos. Ranma ½ Season 3 is currently streaming on Netflix.
