Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid franchise is expanding to the stage. A theatrical adaptation of Freida McFadden’s thriller is scheduled to premiere on September 14, 2027, with its tour opening at London’s Richmond Theatre.
Bekah Brunstetter, known for Broadway’s The Notebook, is adapting McFadden’s novel, while Matthew Dunster, the Tony-nominated director of Hangmen, will direct. Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska are producing for Melting Pot, in association with Lionsgate. No actors have been attached to the stage production yet.
The stage production will arrive several months before the film sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, which is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Production on the sequel began in late October. Sweeney will return as Millie, while Michele Morrone will reprise his role as Enzo. Kirsten Dunst, Paul Anthony Kelly, Brittany Snow and Stephen Kalyn are joining the cast.
The original film, directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine, starred Sweeney as Millie Calloway, a young woman who becomes a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchester family. Amanda Seyfried played Nina Winchester, with Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester.
The film reportedly earned slightly more than $400 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. Its cast also included Michele Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins, Amanda Joy Erickson and Megan Ferguson. The Housemaid is currently streaming on HBO Max.
The stage adaptation joins other Lionsgate properties being developed for live performance, including Dirty Dancing, Now You See Me and The Hunger Games. Lionsgate executive Jenefer Brown said the stage play and sequel are continuing the franchise’s momentum while offering audiences a new way to experience its suspense and twists.
