Naruto’s shinobi clans are powerful for different reasons. Some pass down rare abilities known as kekkei genkai or dojutsu, while others rely on specialized techniques, tactical skill and generations of experienced fighters. Their legacies also shape the world around them, from the founding of villages to the origins of chakra.
At the lower end of this ranking, the Aburame use insects that live in symbiosis with their bodies. Their kikaichu feed on an opponent’s chakra, while other insects can track targets, spread poison or attack discreetly. This makes the clan particularly effective at stealth and reconnaissance, even if its techniques may not end a fight quickly.
The Akimichi convert calories into chakra to increase their size and strength. Their Multi Size Technique and Human Bullet Tank turn their bodies into weapons, while the Three Coloured Pills can provide a further boost at a cost to the user’s health. Choji’s Butterfly Mode draws on the same principle to grant him wings and immense strength.
The Hozuki clan’s Hydrification Technique lets its members turn their bodies into water, allowing many physical attacks to pass through them. They can slip through narrow spaces and reform, but lightning-style attacks can disrupt the ability. Suigetsu illustrates its defensive potential, while Gengetsu and Mangetsu show other ways clan members put their abilities to use.
The Sarutobi are known less for one inherited power than for broad ninjutsu knowledge and adaptability. Hiruzen Sarutobi mastered all five basic chakra natures and earned the title “The Professor.” His contract with Enma also gave him a powerful ally capable of transforming into the Diamond Staff. Asuma, Konohamaru and Mirai carry on the family’s service to Konohagakure.
Kaguya clan members can manipulate their bones, growing blades from their bodies and reinforcing their skeletons. Kimimaro demonstrated how the ability could support both precise strikes and attacks across a wider area, making the clan dangerous even in desperate circumstances.
The Hyuga’s Byakugan offers near-360-degree vision and allows users to see an opponent’s chakra network. Paired with the Gentle Fist, it lets them target chakra points with precision and interfere with an enemy’s control. Experienced members can also use Rotation, expelling chakra to defend against attacks from multiple directions.
The Uzumaki were known for their great life force, large chakra reserves and sealing techniques. Their fuinjutsu could restrain targets or contain substantial amounts of chakra. Kushina and Naruto reflect the endurance associated with the clan, while Naruto’s ability to withstand Kurama’s power demonstrates what its bloodline can offer alongside training and determination. The clan’s reputation for sealing was so feared that other nations attacked Uzushiogakure, scattering its members.
The Senju built their influence through mastery of many forms of ninjutsu rather than a single inherited technique. Hashirama’s Wood Release made him a formidable shinobi and enabled him to suppress tailed beasts. His brother Tobirama created influential techniques, including the Shadow Clone and Flying Thunder God techniques, and helped establish Konohagakure’s institutions.
The Uchiha are renowned for the Sharingan, which enhances perception, helps users read movements and enables powerful genjutsu. Some experienced members awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan and gain individual abilities; others can manifest Susanoo, a giant chakra warrior with offensive and defensive capabilities. Madara, Obito, Itachi and Sasuke show how the clan’s powers have shaped the history of the shinobi world.
At the top are the Otsutsuki, beings who travel between worlds and harvest chakra fruits from Divine Trees. Consuming the fruit strengthens their chakra and changes their DNA, giving them abilities that go beyond ordinary shinobi techniques. Their powers include dojutsu, chakra absorption, flight and space-time techniques, as well as shinjutsu.
Individual Otsutsuki abilities include Isshiki’s power to shrink himself and objects, Kaguya’s ability to move between dimensions, and Momoshiki’s capacity to absorb and return chakra-based attacks. Shibai Otsutsuki is said to have attained a godlike existence after consuming countless chakra fruits, placing the clan at the top of the series’ power scale.
