In the Star Wars universe, Gray Jedi are depicted as a faction that split from the traditional Order to study and wield both the Light and Dark sides of the Force. However, an examination of their code suggests that their belief in balancing these opposing forces is largely misguided and contradicts established lore. The very premise of the Gray Jedi Code claims that "There must be both Dark and Light," a statement often mistaken for wisdom but which fails to align with the creator's vision. George Lucas has defined balance in the Force not as an equilibrium between good and evil, but specifically as the destruction of the Dark Side and the Sith. This implies that the two sides do not need to coexist, and that one is inherently good while the other is evil.
The code further asserts that "There is no Dark Side, nor a Light Side," arguing for a holistic view where the Force is undivided. This claim is directly refuted by Star Wars canon, including the ethereal realm of Mortis seen in The Clone Wars. In that storyline, three beings represented aspects of the Force, with the Daughter embodying the Light and the Son personifying the Dark, constantly at odds until the Chosen One restored balance. Additionally, the Gray Jedi claim to seek a balance that the Jedi Order already pursues as its ultimate goal. While fans have debated the meaning of balance, Lucas maintained it involves eliminating the Dark Side rather than maintaining equal parts of both, making the Gray Jedi's dedication to mixing them dangerous.
The philosophy also equivocates the Jedi and the Sith by positioning Gray Jedi as the true protectors of balance, suggesting that both traditional orders lead the Force astray. This comparison is flawed because the Sith are built on hate and greed, whereas the Jedi, despite their flaws, strive for peace and justice. By permitting followers to indulge in the Dark Side, the Gray Jedi code creates a high risk of corruption. Master Yoda noted that while the Dark Side is not more powerful than the Light, it is quicker to master and offers instant gratification, making it incredibly seductive and addictive. The restrictive rules of the Jedi Order exist precisely because the temptation of the Dark Side is too great for even the strongest to resist.
Furthermore, the code's assertion that embracing both sides brings inner peace is contradicted by character arcs such as Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens. Ren described himself as being torn apart by the internal war between Light and Dark, finding no peace even after succumbing to the Dark Side by killing his father. The code also champions the idea of "Chaos, yet Order," an attempt to bridge Jedi and Sith philosophies that makes little logical sense since these goals are incompatible opposites. While the Gray Code presumes the Jedi own the Light, Luke Skywalker clarified in The Last Jedi that the Force does not belong to the Jedi, meaning one can stand in the Light without being a member of the Order.
Despite these significant flaws and the hypocrisy of recognizing evil while still dabbling in it, the Gray Jedi code contains one valid point. It states that "evil must not be allowed to flourish." This line reveals that even though they dabble with the Dark Side, Gray Jedi constituents recognize that the Sith represent a greater threat than the Light could ever be. They draw a line between good and evil, acknowledging that darkness spreading throughout the galaxy would be disastrous, distinguishing them from the Sith who seek to infect the galaxy with greater darkness.
