Amazon MGM Studios is developing a live-action film based on Scarlet Morning, ND Stevenson’s 2025 fantasy novel. Kate Herron, who directed the first season of Loki, is set to direct and produce through her company, Bag of Rats. Kari Granlund will write the screenplay.
The story follows Viola and Wilmur, two friends who have spent 15 years waiting for their parents in the town of Caveat. Their routine changes when pirate captain Cadence Chase arrives during a storm. The pair agree to hand over a mysterious book in exchange for a place on her ship, hoping to find their parents. Their journey takes them into the dangerous world beyond Caveat, where they must uncover the truth behind its legends and a threat to Dickerson’s Sea.
Stevenson has described Scarlet Morning as the first book in a planned duology. Its sequel is titled Evening Grey. The novels grew out of a manuscript he wrote as a teenager and later revised during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stevenson is also the creator of Nimona, which became a Netflix animated film, and the showrunner of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. He co-created the comic series Lumberjanes. Herron’s other directing work includes episodes of Margo’s Got Money Troubles and The Last of Us. Granlund’s writing credits include Godmothered and Lady and the Tramp.
