Devils' Crest begins with a class of elementary school students testing the upcoming Full Dive VRMMORPG Actual Magic during a field trip. When they return from the game, they find their building damaged, the staff dead and monsters roaming the halls. The children can also use the magic and abilities they learned in the game, turning their familiar world into a dangerous mystery they must solve without adult supervision.

The premiere's first two episodes focus largely on setup. The opening episode introduces the game's mechanics through action rather than extended explanations, showing the students taming a horned rabbit and using magic and combat skills against a dragon. It also establishes the main group of Yuuma, Sawa, Kenji and Minagi, while briefly introducing classmates who occupy a higher position in the classroom's social hierarchy.

The series' central premise emerges after the students return to reality: monsters have appeared in the real world, the children retain their magical abilities and death is a genuine danger. Rather than depicting a conventional story about being trapped inside a deadly virtual game, Devils' Crest combines the game and the real world into a single crisis.

The second episode adds emotional weight through flashbacks involving Sumika, Yuuma's friend who has become a monster. These scenes reveal that she is more complex than her initial image as the class princess and explain why Yuuma refuses to abandon her. The revelations make her situation both more tragic and more mysterious, while adding a personal dimension to the broader survival story.

Visually, the first two episodes feature fast, fluid action and consistent character designs. However, the production repeatedly reuses animation, including showing the first episode's cliffhanger three times across the two episodes. Other scenes return as flashbacks during battles, creating an unusually direct form of visual guidance that can feel as though the series does not trust viewers to remember what they have seen.

The soundtrack is solid, and the ending theme stands out positively. The opening theme is the musical highlight, with Ado providing the vocals. Overall, the anime establishes a firm framework for its magic system, characters and premise, but the main story has not fully begun yet. The premiere screening leaves a large number of questions unanswered, although the foundation is in place for the series to develop its mystery.

The first two episodes were viewed at their Japanese premiere screening on November 1, 2026. Devils' Crest is scheduled to begin streaming on Amazon Prime on November 6, 2026.
