Henry Cavill’s live-action Warhammer 40,000 series has faced several delays since Amazon announced the project in 2022. In a recent interview with Deadline, filmmaker Mike Flanagan offered an explanation for the slow progress while confirming that the adaptation has reached an important creative breakthrough.
Flanagan, who joined the project this summer to write the script, declined to reveal plot details. He explained that the scale of the franchise has made it difficult to determine where the series should begin. Warhammer 40,000 encompasses hundreds of novels, in addition to its tabletop games, interactive elements and wider lore.
According to Flanagan, the team has now found “a very cool and unexpected on-ramp” into the setting. He did not disclose what that starting point involves, adding that he is under strict secrecy and that Cavill would be unhappy if he revealed more about their work. The series still does not have an official plot, and Amazon has not announced a release date.
Flanagan’s involvement brings extensive experience in psychological thrillers and character-driven adaptations. His credits include Oculus, Absentia, Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher. He also directed the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep.
The filmmaker recently made his Prime Video debut with Carrie, a series adaptation of King’s novel that received a second-season renewal after its debut. His other announced projects include a series based on The Dark Tower, DCU’s Clayface and The Exorcist: Martyrs.
Although Warhammer 40,000 is not primarily a horror property, Flanagan’s experience with layered characters and dark themes could shape the eventual adaptation. For now, the project’s most significant update is that its creative team believes it has found a way into the franchise’s expansive universe.
