Netflix is deploying a new artificial intelligence tool named AI Discover to improve its content recommendation system. Announced on November 3, this feature aims to help users find titles more accurately by leveraging machine learning to analyze viewing history and preferences in real time. The technology will initially launch on the Netflix TV app for a limited number of subscribers in the United States before expanding globally.

The AI Discover tool encourages viewers to select from preset themes such as "Something Light," "Scare Me," "Workplace Comedy Favorites," "Family Movie Night," "Quick Watches," "Family Scandal Sagas," and "Royal Court Intrigue." Unlike standard categories, this feature dynamically suggests titles based on individual user data while also incorporating what is currently trending on the platform. According to Variety, this initiative focuses on enhancing user engagement rather than integrating AI directly into content production.

This launch marks a historic shift as Netflix officially brands its first user-facing application powered by artificial intelligence. The move comes as the streaming giant seeks to increase total watch time per subscriber, particularly in the U.S., following a recent decline in viewing metrics despite maintaining its position as the top streaming platform.

The technological upgrade is part of a broader corporate restructuring. Netflix recently executed its largest round of layoffs in company history and replaced content chief Bela Bajaria with industry veteran Peter Rice to drive more hit productions. Additionally, the company dismissed Dan Lin, who served as Chair of Film.
