Netflix is developing an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, the tabletop trading card game owned by Wizards of the Coast. The project continues the streamer’s work with the Hasbro-owned company and arrives after Arcane concluded its planned two-season run.
Terry Matalas will serve as showrunner. His previous credits include 12 Monkeys and Star Trek: Picard. Animation studio DIGIC is attached to the series, while Oscar-winning filmmaker Patrick Osborne is also set to produce it.
The series is expected to focus on Chandra, alongside other established characters such as Ajani and Jace. The franchise’s multiverse and shifting genres could also give the adaptation room to explore different kinds of stories, although the available details do not establish how the show will use that scope.
Arcane set a high bar for Netflix’s animated fantasy adaptations, earning attention for its animation and storytelling despite beginning with a game world that had a comparatively niche audience. Magic: The Gathering will invite similar comparisons, but it has a different creative team and source material. Whether it reaches the same level of success remains to be seen.
