The Day After Tomorrow is currently the most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States, according to streaming rankings site FlixPatrol. The 2004 science-fiction disaster film has returned to the charts following its debut on the platform, more than two decades after its theatrical release.
Directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Emmerich and Jeffrey Nachmanoff, the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Sela Ward, Emmy Rossum and Ian Holm. Its story follows paleoclimatologist Jack Hall, played by Quaid, as he warns that global warming could disrupt the North Atlantic Ocean and trigger a sudden ice age. His son Sam, played by Gyllenhaal, is in New York when extreme weather strikes and the city floods.
The film was inspired by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber’s 1999 nonfiction book The Coming Global Superstorm. It received mixed reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 44% from critics and 50% from audiences, but performed strongly in theaters. It earned $85.8 million during its opening weekend and ultimately grossed $555.6 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $125 million.
The Day After Tomorrow is available to stream on Netflix.
