Batman’s rogues gallery includes many villains who have become familiar faces on the big screen, but a number of notable adversaries have yet to appear in a live-Action movie. The list ranges from psychologically complex criminals to monstrous threats and shadowy organizations, each offering a different kind of challenge for the Dark Knight.

Anarky, also known as Lonnie Machin, is presented as a possible supporting villain rather than a film’s central antagonist. His opposition to corruption and class inequality in Gotham gives him a more complicated motivation than many of Batman’s enemies. Man-Bat offers a contrasting kind of threat: scientist Kirk Langstrom transforms himself into a frightening creature, making the character both tragic and dangerous.

Deacon Joseph Blackfire, the cult leader at the heart of the comic storyline Batman: The Cult, could bring a different menace to a grounded Batman film. Firefly, meanwhile, came close to a live-action movie appearance: Garfield Lynns was set to be played by Brendan Fraser in the canceled Batgirl film. The character has appeared in animation, video games and comics, but not in a live-action Batman movie.

The Phantasm has appeared in a theatrical Batman film, 1993’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, but not in live action. Andrea Beaumont, a former love of Bruce Wayne, becomes a vengeful figure targeting Gotham’s criminal underworld. Her methods put her at odds with Batman, creating a conflict built around their different ideas of justice.

Other unadapted foes include Jervis Tetch, the Mad Hatter, who uses mind-controlling hats, and Hush, Bruce Wayne’s childhood friend Thomas Elliott, whose knowledge of Batman makes him a formidable opponent. The article notes minor teases of Hush in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, but says the character has yet to appear on screen in a substantial role.

The Ventriloquist, Arnold Wesker, and his puppet Scarface could fit either a grounded story or a more comic-book-inspired film. Professor Hugo Strange, one of Batman’s earliest foes, has appeared in live-action television but not in a Batman movie. His knowledge of the hero’s identity makes him a threat to Bruce Wayne as well as to Batman.

The Court of Owls, a powerful group of Gothamites who operate from the shadows, rounds out the list. Created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo during their New 52 Batman run, the organization has become a prominent modern enemy. The article points to growing clues that the group could appear in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman: Part II, but does not confirm an appearance.
