Devils' Crest begins with a class of elementary school students testing “Actual Magic,” an upcoming full-dive virtual reality MMORPG. When the children wake from the game, they find their building damaged, the staff dead and monsters roaming the halls. They also discover that they can use magic outside the game, turning their situation into a mystery that blends virtual and real-world danger.
The first two episodes are primarily devoted to setting up the series. The premiere introduces the game’s mechanics through the students’ experiences, including taming a horned rabbit and battling a dragon. It also establishes the central group of Yuuma, Sawa, Kenji and Minagi, while introducing classmates who occupy a higher position in the classroom’s social hierarchy.
The series’ premise is not simply about being trapped inside a deadly virtual game. Instead, Devils' Crest merges the game with reality, leaving the children to deal with monsters and the possibility of genuine death in the real world. The second episode adds further context through flashbacks involving the young protagonists, particularly Sumika, Yuuma’s friend who has become a monster. These scenes explain why Yuuma refuses to abandon her and add emotional weight to the mystery surrounding her condition.
Visually, the opening episodes are described as fast, fluid and consistently on-model. However, the review criticizes the extensive reuse of animation. The conclusion of the first episode is shown three times across the two episodes, while other scenes return as flashbacks during battles. This repeated visual explanation can make the direction feel overly cautious toward the audience.
The soundtrack is considered solid, with an ending theme described as above average. The opening song stands out, led by Ado’s performance.
Overall, Devils' Crest is judged to have a slow but necessary beginning. The episodes establish the magic system, characters and basic premise, although the main story has yet to fully take shape and leaves many questions unanswered. The first two episodes were viewed at the Japanese premiere screening on November 1, 2026. The series is scheduled to begin streaming on Amazon Prime on November 6, 2026.
The review awarded the premiere an overall grade of B-, with grades of C+ for story, A- for animation, B for art and B for music.
