Godzilla Minus Zero earned 910 million yen (about US$5.75 million) from 590,000 tickets on its opening day in Japan, setting a new record for the highest opening-day earnings by a live-Action film in the country. TOHO announced the figures on Wednesday, noting that the total covers both Japanese and foreign live-action releases.
The film’s opening-day earnings were 201% higher than those of its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One. It opened on Tuesday, November 3, which is Godzilla Day in Japan and also coincided this year with the national Culture Day holiday.
Directed, written and overseen for visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki, the sequel is set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. Returning cast members include Ryūnosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe and Hidetaka Yoshioka, alongside other actors from the previous film. Min Tanaka joins the cast as biologist Kanji Murakami.
GKIDS and TOHO are scheduled to release Godzilla Minus Zero in North America on November 6. The companies said it will also open during the same week in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, with further international release dates to be announced.
