In the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “A Taste of Armageddon,” Captain Kirk confronts a society that has made war seem bloodless. His response is a blunt reminder that people can acknowledge their history of violence without accepting it as their future.
The Enterprise is travelling to Eminiar VII to establish diplomatic relations when its crew is warned to stay away because the planet is at war with neighboring Vendikar. Ambassador Fox presses Kirk to go down to the surface. There, the crew finds no visible signs of conflict.
Eminiar VII’s leader, Anan 7, explains that the war is conducted through computer simulations. When a simulated attack registers casualties, people on the affected planet are required to report for execution in matching numbers. The arrangement keeps the conflict going while avoiding the destruction of a conventional war, and the two societies regard it as a way to preserve their civilizations.
Kirk rejects that reasoning. He tells them: “We’re human beings with the blood of a million savage years on our hands, but we can stop it!” He adds that admitting people have been killers does not mean they must keep killing. The point is not to deny the past, but to accept responsibility for what happens next.
Kirk ultimately destroys the computers that run the simulation, leaving both planets to face the possibility of real war. The people of Eminiar VII and Vendikar then come together to discuss their differences. The episode frames Kirk’s intervention as a demand that they confront the consequences of their choices rather than hide behind a system that makes killing appear controlled.
