Maya Hawke is reportedly joining the live-Action Magic: The Gathering movie, marking the first major casting addition to the project from Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment. Director Matt Johnson is also co-writing the film.

According to Deadline, Hawke’s role has not been revealed, but she is expected to play a major part in an ensemble cast. The producers reportedly prioritized pursuing a deal with her after her audition. The film’s story and characters have not yet been announced.

The movie will draw on the trading card game’s fictional history, which spans multiple worlds. It remains unclear whether the film will center on Planeswalkers, powerful figures able to travel between planes, or characters tied to a single world. The adaptation could also tell an original story while incorporating elements of existing lore.

Magic: The Gathering debuted in 1993. Its stories have included the conflict between the plane of Dominaria and Phyrexia, as well as the Gatewatch, a group of Planeswalkers who united to protect the multiverse.

Hawke is known for playing Robin Buckley in Stranger Things. Alongside the live-action film, Star Trek: Picard and VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas is developing a Magic: The Gathering animated series for Netflix.
