The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 is approaching the midpoint of its first cour with Episode 6, titled “The Paper Village.” After Episode 53 introduced the White Lady as the arc’s central antagonist, the story is set to shift toward a smaller mystery and the return of a familiar rear palace figure.
Episode 53 followed Maomao as she attended the White Lady’s theater performance and was selected to participate on stage. By observing the show closely, Maomao was able to determine that the apparent supernatural tricks were based on scientific methods rather than magic. Her experience at the theater also gave her a glimpse of the extravagant lifestyle enjoyed by wealthy merchants.
The White Lady’s performance left Maomao with another question after she saw the woman consume mercury. Maomao considered whether the substance might have been used for medicinal reasons, but the situation became more suspicious when several merchants were poisoned after the White Lady’s final performance and disappearance. The mystery remains unresolved, with the missing performer continuing to occupy Maomao’s thoughts.
The next episode will focus on Maomao’s journey to the Paper Village. After sending Chou-u and Zulin to gather medicinal herbs, Maomao receives a poisonous plant that closely resembles the herb they were meant to find. The discovery provides an opportunity for further instruction before Maomao is asked to accompany Guen, better known to her as the Quack Doctor, to his home village.
Jinshi and Basen will also travel with Maomao and Guen. The trip is expected to offer more insight into Guen’s background while giving Maomao another setting in which to investigate unusual events.
