Thief: The Dark Project is returning on December 3, 2026, with a remastered edition for PC, PlayStation 5, PS4, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S. Standard and deluxe editions will be available, while physical versions for PS5 and Switch 2 are also planned.
Nightdive Studios is developing the remaster and has partnered with the creators of Thief: The Black Parade for a new expansion titled The Tarnished Mirror. The expansion adds four missions and takes place directly after the events of the original game, with Garrett returning to smaller jobs as The City faces political and ideological upheaval.
The remaster will preserve the original game's visual style while adding improvements to textures, models and animations. It will also include quality-of-life features such as a weapons and items wheel, a mission selector and built-in support for custom campaigns.
Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will contain the complete 1998 release as well as the additional content from Thief Gold, the expanded edition released the following year. The Tarnished Mirror will provide new material for returning players and comes from the team behind one of the most acclaimed fan expansions for the series.
Released in 1998, Thief: The Dark Project helped establish stealth mechanics based on light and sound. Its vertical environments and open-ended missions offered multiple ways to complete objectives, helping make the game a landmark in the genre.
Nightdive Studios has previously worked on remasters of classic games including System Shock and its sequel, the first two DOOM games, the first two Quake games and Star Wars: Dark Forces.
