Open-world games can keep players busy for dozens of hours through expansive settings, flexible character systems and activities that extend beyond the main story. Five titles highlighted for their staying power are Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Sleeping Dogs, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077 and Yakuza 0.
Released in 2012, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning brought together a notable creative team: author R. A. Salvatore helped shape its world and lore, Ken Rolston contributed as a designer, and composer Grant Kirkhope co-created its score. Its Destiny system lets players specialize in Might, Finesse or Sorcery, combine those paths, and change their choices as they progress. The combat also encourages experimentation with different weapons and abilities.
Sleeping Dogs follows Wei Shen, a former San Francisco police officer who returns to Hong Kong and goes undercover within the Sun On Yee Triad. The city offers activities ranging from races and gambling to collectibles and side missions. Its three experience systems reward different approaches: Triad XP comes from combat, Police XP from limiting damage and civilian casualties, and Face XP from cosmetic items such as clothing and vehicles.
In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players can pursue the Dragonborn’s main story or set it aside to explore the province. Side quests, factions, dungeons and character-building options offer alternatives to the central conflict, while players can develop their character as a mage, assassin, warrior or a combination of styles. The game’s modding scene has also helped bring players back years after its release.
Cyberpunk 2077 places players in Night City as V, a mercenary with Arasaka technology in their head that is gradually replacing their mind with Johnny Silverhand’s consciousness. Beyond the main story, players can take jobs for fixers and factions, confront Cyberpsychos, and build relationships with characters. Smaller story moments, including checking on Misty after Jackie’s death and following a tarot-card quest, add personal stories to the city’s broader activities.
Yakuza 0 tells parallel stories about Kiryu and Majima, two men navigating the criminal underworld. Its districts, Kamurocho and Sotenbori, contain activities such as real estate, cabaret-club management, karaoke, bowling and pocket circuit racing. Many minigames connect to side stories and the people living in the districts, giving players reasons to explore beyond the main plot.
