Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a middle-school science teacher and molecular biologist sent on a mission to stop astrophage from dimming the Sun. The substance threatens to push Earth into an ice age, and the mission to Tau Ceti is presented as humanity’s last chance to find a solution.

Grace is reluctant to join the crew, arguing that he is not an astronaut and lacks the courage for a mission with little chance of success. In a flashback, Commander Yáo Li-Jie challenges that belief with a simple thought: “Anyone can be brave. You just need someone to be brave for.”

The line suggests that courage is not an innate quality but a choice shaped by purpose and connection. That idea carries through the story after Grace wakes from an induced coma aboard the Hail Mary, alone near Tau Ceti. He eventually meets Rocky, an alien investigating the same threat, and the two learn to communicate and work together.

Grace’s friendship with Rocky turns a mission that initially seems doomed into a shared effort to save their respective planets. Yáo’s words help explain the change: Grace’s willingness to take risks grows from his connection with someone who also needs help.
