Detective stories have been a fixture of thriller cinema for decades, following everyone from hardboiled private investigators to police officers confronting serial killers and institutional corruption. This ranking brings together ten films that stand out for their memorable mysteries and influential approaches to the genre.
At the top is Chinatown, with Jack Nicholson as private investigator Jake Gittes. Hired to follow a Los Angeles official, Gittes is drawn into a case involving murder, deception and hidden scandals. The film’s dark mood and shifting revelations make it, in the ranking’s view, the definitive hardboiled detective thriller.
The Maltese Falcon, John Huston’s 1941 adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s novel, is another landmark of the private-eye story. Humphrey Bogart plays Sam Spade, who becomes a suspect after his partner is killed and finds himself caught up in a search for a valuable relic. The film’s twists helped shape the detective movies that followed.
Several entries focus on police investigations. In Se7en, veteran detective Somerset and rookie Mills pursue a killer whose crimes are tied to the Seven Deadly Sins. David Fincher’s bleak atmosphere and the story’s unsettling conclusion helped make it a defining thriller of its era. The French Connection, meanwhile, follows Gene Hackman’s Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle as he investigates a heroin shipment, with the film emphasizing the painstaking work and risks of a police case.
Dirty Harry also pairs a citywide manhunt with a portrait of a frustrated detective. Clint Eastwood plays Inspector Harry Callahan, assigned to track a sniper known as Scorpio. The film’s depiction of conflict between law enforcement and bureaucracy became a lasting model for the Hollywood cop thriller.
Other films put character relationships at the center of their mysteries. In Witness, Philadelphia detective John Book protects a young Amish boy who witnessed a murder, after discovering that a fellow officer may be involved. The investigation unfolds alongside the developing relationship between Book and the boy’s widowed mother. L.A. Confidential follows three Los Angeles officers whose different methods collide as they investigate a brutal murder and a wider scandal.
The ranking also includes stories in which the investigator is not a professional detective. The Third Man follows novelist Holly Martins as he looks into the apparent death of his friend in postwar Vienna, finding inconsistencies that lead him to question what happened. The film builds suspense through an atmosphere of paranoia and contrasts Martins’ amateur sleuthing with police work.
The Last Boy Scout takes a more comic, hardboiled approach. Bruce Willis plays Joe Hallenbeck, a former Secret Service agent working as a private detective. After a woman he was hired to protect is murdered, he joins forces with her boyfriend, a former NFL star, to investigate a case tied to corruption in professional football.
Rounding out the list, The Silence of the Lambs follows FBI recruit Clarice Starling as she seeks information from imprisoned killer Hannibal Lecter to help find Buffalo Bill. The investigation places Starling’s profiling work and her uneasy exchanges with Lecter at the heart of the thriller.
